Basis is a unique layer in the SAP
architecture. SAP Basis acts as a linking bridge between the operating system,
database, network architecture and the different modules in SAP such as SAP
FICO, SAP MM, and SAP SD etc. The Operating system is also called as computing
infrastructure.
The R/3 Basis includes the client/server
architecture and its configuration, a relational database management system
(RDBMS), and a graphical user interface (GUI). Basis components also include a
development environment for R/3 applications, and a data dictionary, as well as
user and system administration and monitoring tools.
SAP NetWeaver is new product introduced
by company SAP. This SAP NetWeaver is supported by several technologies like
Microsoft, .NET, Oracle, Java EE, and IBM WebSphere etc. for customizations and
other extending processes for customers. SAP NetWeaver is comprised with
several components such as:
- SAP Mobile Infrastructure
- SAP Enterprise Portal
- SAP Business Information Warehouse
- Master Data Management
- SAP Exchange Infrastructure
- SAP Web Application Server
Comparing both SAP Basis and SAP NetWeaver
from administration point of view, SAP Basis is the root of both SAP WEB AS and
SAP NetWeaver. SAP Basis has only ABAP stack, which means in that only ABAP
programs can run. SAP Basis now evolved into SAP NetWeaver for supporting built
in web services and java technology.
